In the dog days of summer, Jasmine spends a lot of time under the porch. She's developed a bark-in-place policy.
During the daytime she only budges if you open the door to ask, "What in the world are you barking at?" Then she'll take off like a rocket towards the interloper (heron, rabbit, cow).
Lately I've wondered about hooking a walkie-talkie up to her collar so I could ask her the same thing when she's barking beneath the bedroom window at 3:30 am.
Ha ha! I've seen a number of posts lately that somehow define the Dog Days of summer... Most of them explaining the ancient history and astronomy, etc. This is certainly an unique definition.
ReplyDeletecan you clear a spot for me next to her please? thank you. you only need to bring us lemon aid once a day in mid afternoon.
ReplyDeleteShe jumps up and runs only to appear to earn her keep- in short, she is a shirker dog.
ReplyDeleteMine doesn't even bark at visitors, let alone earn his keep, unless you count the flies he catches and consumes in the kitchen.
She's cute even when she's a lazy girl. I like her attempts at showing you what a good hard worker she is, even in the heat of the day. Good girl. She deserves treats for those tricks.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain on the predawn barking. Flounder has taken to scratching his tail end against the front screen door while barking in pleasure. Imagine the combination of screen door banging and dark barking at 2:00 am...
ReplyDeleteOkay, I meant to say "dog" barking not "dark" barking...but it is dark at that hour.
ReplyDeleteOh, and my Feather strikes exactly the same under the steps pose as Jasmine...
E, mine's like that too. Burgler? Rapist? Murderer? No problem, come on it. Give me a treat while you're at it and you'll be my new best friend.
ReplyDeletehahahaha....she's such a beauty! AND not just another pretty face - smart too!
ReplyDeleteNiobium- yellow labrador?
ReplyDeleteMine is, and he's too darned friendly by half.
I'm with Jasmine... way too hot out there!~ She is a smart doggie!
ReplyDeleteP.S. And she is very cute too! I love it when you post about her... my favorite being an earlier post about her bumping into you along the path with a stick in her mouth. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteGotta lover her!!!!
DB I started to talk some about what "dog days" really meant, but decided that shorter was sweeter. :)
ReplyDeleteCharles, you say that now, but you'd soon be wanting flea collars puppy biscuits.
E, flycatching is a pretty important task, especially if you're stuck without a flyswatter. :)
RD, yeah I probably wouldn't work that hard either without air conditioning!
Floridacracker, love your dogs' names. And I think all barking at 2 am is dark barking!
DPR the ducks don't get near her if they can help it. You should see how long it takes to herd them into their pen if Jasmine is "helping".
Nio, now if it's a strange person it's a different story. She used to like the meter reader guy, but now he's definitely an interloper too.
YSW, yeah she is smart. Sometimes. :) I can tell her "Go search the woods!" and she'll make a round behind the chicken coop. If she feels like it.
Thanks Rhodent, she still tries that trick whenever we're out walking. Only now she can pick up bigger sticks. :)
E: nope, Siberian Husky.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute. I think this picture should be framed.
ReplyDeleteDark Barking...heh.
Hee hee! I think Root Beer would be dead if I didn't have A/C. He is one lazy doggie (and I can't bear to see him pant and suffer, anyhow.)
ReplyDeletefabulous photo! as for the two-way walkie talkie, great idea. I want to install a nanny-cam so I can see what exactly prompts my Miss Maggie to drag my duvet and all 17 pillows from my bed periodically when I am not home ...
ReplyDeleteHick she's a slobbery mess but she's a sweetie. :)
ReplyDeleteKaren we'd have no house left if the dog came inside. She's a little jealous that the cats can come in.
Thanks Kathryn. Is she trying to set up camp?! LOL.
