I started out composing this post by whining about how I couldn't identify these bugs, even with the aid of
BugGuide. Then I remembered to search on the
plant name too, and voilĂ !
Jagged Ambush bug,
Phymata erosa.
These individuals weren't too happy about being observed, and crawled away to the underside of the flower when I tried to get closer.

Uh oh...
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike.
That is a very interesting looking insect. I am going to have to see if we have them here in the northwest. I don't think I've ever encountered them yet.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'm more fascinated by the bugs themselves or their excellent names. Very neat pic either way :-)
ReplyDeleteThey look like disgusting ear wax..
ReplyDeleteI've not seen Ambush Bugs here yet this summer. Should be soon if I remember corectly. Neat photo!
ReplyDeleteHeavens to Betsy, that sure is one scarey looking bug and on such a pretty flower too.
ReplyDeleteI had never noticed them before I took this picture. I was originally just going to take a picture of the daisies, and there they were... Go visit FC's place for better pix!
