I looked out the window and couldn't believe what I saw.
Oh! Oh oh oh oh oh!
A wild turkey with four babies! (Meleagris gallopavo.)
I was grinning from ear to ear all afternoon.
Sorry everything's a bit blurry - I never wash the windows. It cuts down on the number of birds that break their necks trying to fly inside. No, really! That's why. Really.
Congrats on the turkeys! And I agree fully with the window washing rationale. I use the same sort of thing with my truck. Fewer bugs will stick to it, or, something.
ReplyDeleteI knew there was a reason our windows are dirty - thank you! The babies are too cute - lucky you!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful find! I love watching them!
ReplyDeleteI never straighten up my closet for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteSeems to work, so far no birds have crashed into it.
That's a great excuse. I'm going to use this one at work to explain my desk.
ReplyDeleteOne day when my son was a young toddler, I grew tired of the avian body count produced by our huge floor-to-ceiling windows and so I spent the afternoon making signs to plaster all over them. I thought they were quite funny, but I got many a cocked eyebrow from visitors.
ReplyDeleteI rather like your approach to it, though.
Great turkeys!
Great turkey photo. I seem to only see them as they fly or rush away through the grass while my camera is still safe in its case.
ReplyDeleteWe get to enjoy a whole flock of them traipsing through our yard. I think they're beautiful birds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a rare treat! I'm glad you caught them on film :)Good show!
ReplyDeleteOh, lucky you! I've never seen the little ones like that.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right about washing the windows. Birds are more important, and not only do you save their lives, you save time for watching them.
:)
we always love to see the turkeys while perusing the pasture across the road from us - but I must admit, we've never encountered momma and babies - how cool is that?!
ReplyDeleteWe too have had the rain - love the rain NOT the lightning that has accompanied.....
Have a great weekend!

such pretty birds. I've never seen babies though. Lucky you. Thanks for sharing your very cool visitors.
ReplyDeletewonderful, such a cool thing to witness. i'm happy for you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delight, to look out the window and have that sight. Yay for baby turkeys.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Hooray!
ReplyDeleteLove your movie of the poults!
Thank you! Thank you! ;-)
I'm grinning now too!
Well I can just imagine how excited you were and you still managed to get a decent video. I'd have been so excited the camera would have been all over the place.
ReplyDeleteRurality, we see the Wild Turkeys here as well, they are fun to watch. They come in the lower horse pasture, still in the cover of the trees as well as over the Creek bank as they teach their offspring the INS and OUTS of life. Awesome video!
ReplyDeleteWe have raised turkeys here as well. Our biggest success was with the Bronze backed ones. One year we had two slated for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Much to our amazement was the poundage one fully dressed. One was 40 # the other 42 #, we had to take them to the local deer dresser so he could cut them down to a size that they would fit into a conventional oven. Having raised the white ones as well we OPT for the bronze back, there is a lot more dark meat and the broth is AMBER and lush!
You won't believe it but after seeing your turkey post I came home to find the same thing in our back yard (somewhat north of you). First time I'd seen the little ones.

Very nice!! I just used that window washing logic with my inlaws... not sure they bought, but I really do think it's true!
