Ginger Lemonade


Ugh. That's 43°C outside, 26°C inside.

Healthy Chef Alex's Sweet Ginger Lemonade (Serves 4)

4 cups filtered water
4 Tbsp. fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 Tbsp. fresh squeezed ginger juice
2 Tbsp. raw honey

You're supposed to make the ginger juice by grating fresh ginger and squeezing the pulp with your hand. Then you're supposed to simmer everything together until the honey is melted. Of course this makes warm lemonade, and if you want cool lemonade like most rational people, you have to wait for it to chill.

I'm glad to have gotten the recipe from Healthy Chef Alex, but this is how I really make it:

Karen's Quick and Dirty Ginger Lemonade (Serves 1)
(When you're in a hurry and don't have time to worry with all that)

2 Tbsp bottled lemon juice
2 Tbsp sugar
3/4 cup tap water
Small amount (to taste) bottled minced ginger

Stir it all up, and plunk in a few ice cubes. No waiting.

The amount of ginger you have to use is miniscule. The ginger I linked to is so fine that it practically dissolves.

    I'm not fond of the taste of ginger but homemade lemonade is always good.

  3. This looks like a great recipe, and much easier than squeezing ginger by hand. I didn't even know you could do that.

  6. Oh Rurality - the display numbers are awful. That's what it was like the previous two years in Austin, but more normal this summer... hope something approaching normality comes your way soon.

    But you can keep the ginger lemonade... even when it's 108º I drink coffee.

  9. I once spend a few months in Namibia where it regularly went above 45°C, so I feel your pain, I really do.
    Here's what we used to drink, it doesn't taste good but contains a lot of good things your body needs but loses due to the heat:

    - A big glass of hand-warm (neither cold nor hot)
    Rooibos or Redbush Tea
    - A bit of sugar, less than half a tea spoon
    - A tiny bit of salt, just what you can hold between two fingers
    - A good shot of lemon juice

    In the evening, we'd usually sit beneath the stars with a glass of whiskey and water. Of course, not a good single malt, just some nice whiskey that you don't feel guilty about diluting with water. A shot in a normal sized glass and then filled ab with cool (again, not cold) water. Very refreshing, better in this respect than a pure shot of whiskey...

    Hope it helps, it might at least make it easier to find those Yellow-throated Warblers, right?

  10. Thanks everybody. We did break the record for consecutive 100° days. Then we had a 97 or 98° day and continued on again with the 100+ days. A tiny raincloud passed over one day but stopped after a few drops (less than 1/8 inches of rain).

    I am really looking forward to cooler weather.
