June Garden Tour

It's really too hot in June to be touring gardens in Alabama.

I didn't want to miss this one, though. I'd previously only seen it in the fall, and knew if would be great in full bloom.

Consider the lilies...

Consider the drumstick alliums too!

My calendula never looked this nice.

He said this was Brazilian verbena, but it must be a cultivated variety. The wild version here isn't nearly as full.

Still considering lilies...

I have no idea what most of these plants are called. Obviously this one is a hydrangea, but I don't know the type. (I can probably find out if you're curious about anything in particular.)

Love those coneflowers.

The gardener said he'd lost a lot during last year's drought, but the garden looked fantastic to me. We got a lot of good spring rain, but it has tapered off severely in the past month. I'm afraid we're in for another dry summer.

Coneflowers always seem to have bumblebees wallowing through them, don't they?

  2. Nice coneflowers. Unfortunately groundhogs ate all the coneflowers here this year.

  3. Beautiful flower pics!

I first saw Brazilian Verbena at a Pennsylvania Welcome Center several years ago. It was beautiful and loaded with butterflies.

    Go here: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/beyond/dir_brazilianverbena.html

I can never find it on the seed racks, 'suppose I'll have to order it, but you reminded me I want some.

    Pouring here today!!

That looks like an oakleaf hydrangea. Gorgeous photos, just BTW.

  8. The coneflowers are gorgeous! I have the verbena growing everywhere this year. For some reason the butterflies aren't here to enjoy them.

  10. Dave, yeah, bees and butterflies. I should probably get me some of those!

John, I had no idea groundhogs ate them! We don't seem to have too many of those around here.

FC, this is the Brazilian verbena that I'm used to. And actually those pics have more flowers than most! It's very weedy. So be careful what you get.

    Kerri, thanks! Me too.

Lime, I was eaten up with envy for the beauty of it. But not the work that went into it all.

NCMW, luckily our host had plenty of cool drinks on hand!

Ron, I think it is a named variety though - the flowers seem double.

Robin, I hope your butterflies are just late in arriving...

FTP, thanks! The garden was full of beautiful plants like these.
