Oh I love turtles. You are lucky. Box turtles are almost to the point of being put on the threatened species list here in PA. You hardly ever see them anymore. Take care of that turtle.

That must be a relatively young one, judging by the color and markings. When they get older they fade to a dull olive green. They can live for sixty years or longer.
So how does Minnesota gal know so much about box turtles? I spent about a year in Missouri and rented a house from a former biologist who had conducted a long-term mark/recapture study of box turtles. Some of the study subjects were still roaming the woods. I miss them!

Turtles are neat animals! Pretty too. If I see one in the road I will stop and take it elsewhere to a better place and turn it loose. I hate to see them get run over by cars.
That's a big turtle. It would be hard to flush him down the toilet if he died.
I wonder if turtles do play peek a boo with their children..

We have three Eastern Box turtles, two larger ones (one male and one female) and 1 baby. The baby does not belong to the large ones. We found two of them in our yard, one someone else found and brought to me (knowing that I like turtles). The baby is so cute, but growing bigger every day (it was found in our back yard). The female has laid two eggs, but neither one of them hatched. We also have one red eared slider and one map turtle. I'm a teacher, and I have 3 little red eared sliders at school. They are my student's favorite animals in our classroom (we have fish, a crawfish, and we used to have gerbils). I think that EVERYONE likes turtles! But it always amuses me when people ask if they will bite.
This guy was near the edge of our property... not sure if he's a permanent resident or just passing through.
I admit to calling turtles "turkles" most of the time and "turkledears" every now and then. It's from a comic book I had when I was a kid. Dennis the Menace says "turkle," and his mother corrects him saying, "That's turtle, dear." So then of course he starts calling them "turkledears". (OK maybe you had to be there.)
Poor turtle. Just laying around with his head in his shell, trying to get some rest, and some other punk turtle tags his shell.
Karen, my father, who never indulged in Dennis the Menace, also refers to them as turkles, and so do I.
I love running across box turtles, and photograph them whenever I see them.
In a month or so, it's going to be the delirious turkle mating season. Not unlike A Midsummer Night's Dream, the turkles are going to be taking after each other like gangbusters. I saw this in the late summer last year and it was really hard to keep from laughing.
I've never seen turtles move so fast.
