I've been busy getting ready for the first spring craft show (Cottontails), so haven't been out and about much. But I can't believe I forgot to post these pictures from a couple of weeks ago:
You may have to enlarge the picture to see it, but this is actual snow.
It only stuck this much, though.
People in the north probably have no conception of this, but around here, whenever snow is mentioned, you have to also discuss whether or not it will stick. (It usually doesn't.)
In other terribly exciting weather news, it has been raining.
Recent view...
which is better than this...
but still not back to this... which is what we used to call "normal".
We didn't have nearly the number of winter Hooded Merganser visitors that we are used to. But lately there have been quite a few Wood Ducks hanging around. (They're extremely camera-shy though.)
Glad to hear you guys received some much needed rain~ happy, happy, joy, joy!
ReplyDeleteit has been so wet here that you can't walk in the yard without the grass slipping in clumps from the soil.
ReplyDeleteWe call that kind of snow just a dusting! How wonderful you are getting rain and just in time for some ducks to move through the area!
ReplyDeleteI am SO Glad you are getting some RAIN!!!
ReplyDeleteYou want snow?
ReplyDelete*shudders*
No more please!!!
Wish I could ship some of my white stuff your way.
ReplyDeleteI've watched the rain coming your way. Hope they'll be more, but not accompanied by the scary winds.
Our snow is "sticking"!! Glad you're getting much-needed rain. I loved the photos of the pond - very pretty. Great eclipse photos too - we had a clear viewing here - but it was super cold out so had to watch in snippets.
ReplyDeleteIt feels like we've had a LOT of rain, though they say we're still not up to "normal" even if you're just counting from the first of January.
ReplyDeleteKF, I guess y'all are getting some of this too. :)
Karl, whoa! That's pretty wet.
Tom, oh yeah, dusting! They don't even get to say that much around here. The Wood ducks breed in this area, but I think there is too much activity right here for them.
Thanks Kerri!
Nickie, well you have to realize that this is about as much as we've seen in... you know I can't even remember how many years! I know in the last 4. I believe it's only snowed more than this once in the last 10 or 15 years. And it used to snow at least an inch or two every year.
Cathy, I wish you could too! I know people in other parts of the country and Canada are probably pretty sick of snow right now. :)
Kris, I'll bet! :) It wasn't too cold the night of the eclipse. The nights have varied a lot lately - some below freezing and others in the 50s. Hard to know what to do with the comforter at night!
The snow business is almost as exciting as FC's rock collecting.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear about your wood ducks though.
Once again you made me look something up, Rurality - yipes - it sounds creepy! Makes me wonder if some nocturnal heart attack deaths are a result of the "elevated heart rate" and "difficulty breathing".
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see some rain has fallen and refilled some of the basin - we hope for rain here in Austin, too, but not on the weekend of Spring Fling.

Thanks for stopping by our blog. Tornados are not good things. :-( Everything will be alright and eventually all will fall into place again. :-)

Oh, and just what are you reading these days that you would come upon such an interesting sentence?
ReplyDeleteOn the topic of snow sticking.. Hop on over to my updated website Ive loaded a few pics of my daily walks this month. This time of year makes me want spring badly.
ReplyDeleteMergansers are beginning to return and pair up on the river, but we are having a low count as well...wonder where they are?
ReplyDeleteDear Abby:
ReplyDeleteI did not run out to buy milk and bread as the snow began to fall and now my neighbors shun me.

It looks as if the plants have been dusted with powdered sugar.:-)

It's so exciting out in Kansas that our southern events pale in comparison ...
ReplyDeleteI find your snow fascinating and a thing of envy. A nice cool winter here, but nary a flurry of snow.
That pond looks wonderful, mine is still bone dry. Recent rains haven't been enough to fill the void.
Otters lately??
Happy to see your pond filling, and that you're getting more rain. Yes, not only does snow "stick" in the north, but it often stays and accumulates for a long time. :-)
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let you know we linked to this article in the March issue of Learning in the Great Outdoors. Thanks!

Sorry I didn't get back here to answer comments any time sooner. That craft show had the longest hours!
ReplyDeletePablo, yeah we are still seeing the ducks almost every day. Maybe they'll breed nearby. Oh, and I was trying to look up the name for something - the hypnic jerk, aka myoclonic twitch - when I found a link to an article with that sentence.
Annie, I hadn't heard of it before, but I'm sure glad I don't have that problem!
Sweetpea, I am so totally late making the blog rounds recently, sorry! I'll check it out.
Cyndy, not here, for sure! I think our water levels were just too low here.
CG, that's my favorite comment of the week! I know exactly what you mean. :)
Randy, y'all probably got more snow than we did this year!
FC, well you're the only one I can pretty much count on outdoing with this amount of snow. :)
SG, it's REALLY been a long time since we've had any accumulation at all.
Thanks Terrell! I appreciate it.
