It was more spectacular before I thought to grab the camera, of course.
I grew up hearing this called sheet lightning or heat lightning, but to be correct I think it's actually called intra-cloud lightning.
I didn't realize, until playing it back, how loudly the frogs out in the pond were singing. And inside, you can hear Beaker (our parakeet, aka budgie) squawking, whistling, and talking. At around 11-12 seconds he says, "crazy bird". You'll have to have your ears pricked and the sound turned up to hear it.

Thanks for the video. Lightning fascinates me, but there's little open sky to see from my house windows, tucked into the woods as it is. I suppose I could walk out to the pastures. . . seems foolish.
That is incredibly cool. I remember seeing lightning like that back east when I was growing up in New Jersey. I haven't seen it in years. It's grand.

When I was growing up in Indiana we called it 'heat lightning' when it didn't appear associated with clouds; it always happened on a steamy evening. I suppose it was lightning from a distant storm reflecting on some very high clouds. Some say there's no such thing as 'heat lightning' but I don't care...I just like saying it.
That was wonderful...we are under a tornado watch here in Nashville and tomorrow we may get snow! Weird spring! gail
LauraP, even as I took this video, I could hear my grandmother telling me that windows are not really protection from lightning... :)

Lythrum, it sure has been a lot more stormy this spring compared to recent years. But I still can't complain about the rain.

We've had some intense weather in Alabama lately. Sunday morning I was woken by some rolling thunder at about 6:00 AM. Unfortunately, I was camping in Talladega National Forest and the ensuing downpour made for a miserable morning. I was hoping it would make some amphibians move, but I didn't find many.
David, that sounds rather unpleasant!
i just told my son that was called heat lightning -- now i can go back & give him the more scientific "intra-cloud lightning"! ;^)
