Mysteries

If I keep finding things like this in the yard, I may have to take up writing murder mysteries.

So far no human bones have shown up, so I might be off the hook for now. I would guess that these are from a deer, or possibly a calf.

It's really not much of a mystery who found the bones and relocated them...

Dem bones are huge. Reminds me of the song Dem bones, dem bones but I can't remember the rest. I don't think they would be deer bones too thick, short and chunky. Must be from something short and stout. Pigs? A mystery for sure.

Looks like one ham bone, one shoulder bone (pork shoulder) and another from a beef blade roast. My guesses anyway. I toss bones and stuff into the hen yard for the birds to clean up which they do remarkably well. Eventually they all get raked up into mulch for something or other.

.....Alan.

"Who Me?" is precious. She didn't drag those bones in through the dog door, though, did she? Wookie brought a live squirrel through ours. Yep.

I sometimes find big old bones like that in my woods, but the land used to be a cattle ranch decades ago. now it's mostly deer bones I come across.

Blech - but, at least he isn't bringing home the rest of it to roll into.

Ki, they look bigger in the pics than they really are I think. I should have included something for scale. But Jasmine already thought I was paying entirely too much attention to them!

Alan, I guess she could have found the remains of a neighbor's pile. I was hoping she hadn't found another way out of the fence though!

Cathy, oh that would be bad. I can just imagine the blood spatter.

Pablo I thought one of the neighbor's calves might have found its way here and died some time ago... but she may have gone over there to visit, who knows. I don't think she killed anything though - we'd have seen more evidence.

Karmyn, no, she does that in place!

Whoa Nelly, those are some big bones! I bet the smell was just as large-

Best bone a dog of mine ever dragged up was a beaver skull. You could see how the teeth grew up into the skull. If I still had it (it disapeared) I'd show it to you :) Pretty neat.

Thanks AMG! She can be sweet when she wants to.

KF the smell was not bad, thank the stars. If I found a beaver skull it wouldn't disappear, because I'd probably bring it inside the house!

Heh- Love the bones. i was showing a squeamish guy our property in the Catskills--I had mowed a nice path through many acres, just for walks...and we came upon a deer head just sitting in the path. just a head. I was like "Oh Look! A deer head!" as if it were a flower or a cherry tree, and he was OH MY GOD there must be monsters nearby! AGH! where's the rest of the deer?
I'm sure he wanted to run back to the house, at top speed. I thought I must be a bit jaded, a bit..."ah the cycle of life.." but really it never surprises me to see an arm , leg , or head lying around somewhere.
