Early bloomer

Cherry Japanese Apricot blossoms...

... at the in-laws' this past weekend.

I haven't seen cherry trees blooming around here, and the inlaws are north of here, so I guess this one's just an early bloomer.

Updated:
My sister-in-law emailed to tell me that the reason this is blooming before other cherry trees, is that it isn't a cherry tree! It's a Japanese Apricot. (The bark looks just like that of a cherry.)

Wow, that's a stand out!
An encouragement to see--even if you're hundred of miles into warmer territory.

Isn't that beautiful? I haven't noticed any around here blooming yet.

Well I got the ID wrong - it's a Japanese Apricot tree instead of a Cherry, so says my mother-in-law. So, that would be a good thing to plant if you want to get the jump on the Cherries I guess. :)

Oh, I saw these blooming around the UAB Humanities Building on Sunday, and I was wondering what they were. I couldn't figure it out because I knew it was too early for Cherries. Thanks for solving that mystery!

I'm thinking we ought to get one of these! I love it. This one is planted in a sort of protected location on the side of the house, so that probably helps with the jump-start too.
