Ack! Blooger is driving me crazy... I haven't been able to comment on my own &$#(*&% blog!
Well anyway, yep that's a beaver-chewed stick. They always leave those little tell-tale teeth marks.
Those rocks were down at the creekside, FC. I think they're cool too!
This afternoon I spent a bit of time clearing out the drainage pipe by the driveway. Yep a beaver had been trying to stuff it full of large sticks. (There was also some styrofoam, half of a picture frame, and a ratty blue hardhat.)
Beavers can be really annoying, but you have to admire them. When you see what they build, it's truly amazing. I saw a 5 tier beaver dam going up a slope on the south side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in Delaware. 5 terraced ponds....totally amazing. You almost expected to see little beavers with survey equipment and plans and well, hardhats. How big was that hardhat you found? Beaver sized?
I always love your pictures and adventures... hope those pesky beavers incorporate some drainange this year for your driveway! They are sure persistent buggers when they want to be!
Living in rural north central Alabama. Currently overstocked with pets and poultry. Having lived in several small towns and larger cities, country life is taking some getting used to.
The photo is of Jasmine, fearless protector of the homestead from coyotes, bobcats, deer, herons, airplanes, butterflies and fuzzy little bunnies.

I'm perplexed. I'll guess it's a quill of some sort. Porcupine?
Looks rather like a midnight snack to me. :)
Beaver floss?

I *thought* that's what it was, but it was a nicely obscure mystery.
